Crowther old Students storm Lokoja for reunion

Lokoja, the capital of Kogi State is set to receive the Old Students of one of the oldest secondary schools in the ancient city; Crowther Memorial College, who would storm the town for a reunion.

The event which is schedule to hold from Thursday, 29th November, 2018, is expected to host old students of the college from far back as the 1970s.

Secretary of the planning committee and head boy of the 1988 set, Igiku Shadrack Edward, told our reporter that the event is aimed at making efforts to bring back the lost glory of the institution which was a reference point for academic prowess and discipline in the past.

He added that the reunion would also serve as an avenue to help suggest ways of raising funds to put back to shape some dilapidated structures in the school and give it its deserved look.

“Old friends who have last seen each other several decades ago would also have the opportunity of reconnecting and having positive rapport while catching up on some interesting times missed over the years. Current students will, on their parts, have the opportunity to learn from the ex students on how they navigated the tortuous waters of life up to their current positions,” he noted.

“If God can elevate some notable individuals who passed through the school during their secondary education, the future of the current students is bright too and they can do well if they learn from the antecedents of the old students,” he added.

Speaking on the event, the administrator of Lokoja Local Government Area who is also an old student, Hon Lawal Shiru said there are many reasons why the reunion has become important  as the present condition of the college calls for swift intervention.

He lamented that the school is living in its old glory as structures are nothing to write home about, a departure from the past when crowther memorial college was the center of excellence in the entire Local Government Area.

The institution, he recalled, has produced so many illustrious sons and daughters of this country, including retired Permanent Secretaries such as Doctor Mohammed Koro; the Wali of Lokoja, Rear Admiral Ibrahim Dirisu (retired); the current National President of the Old Boys Association, Colonel Yomi Dare (retired); Hon Musa Ahmadu, former Secretary to the State Government and former member of the National Assembly; among several other eminent individuals in the country.

If crowther memorial college could produce such people, he further noted, it should not be looking the way it current is. “We have to come together and find ways to solve the problem confronting our Alma mater.”

The programme of event made available to our reporter indicate that Thursday 29th November, 2018, is billed for arrival of the Old Students residing outside Lokoja, while Friday would see several activities including an early morning walk, visits to dignitaries in around Lokoja and Kotonkarfe, Jummaat Prayer at Lokoja Central Mosque and a novelty football match between the Old Students and the current school team.

Saturday, first of December would see the main event starting with a general meeting at the compound of crowther memorial college in Lokoja and an Award Night which would see several individuals being conferred with awards of excellence, including the Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello at the Reverton Hotel.
