Tinubu Commissions BARECKS, Africa’s First Barefoot Renewable Energy College
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commissioned the Barefoot Renewable Energy College (BARECKS) at the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, Kogi State, describing the institution as the first of its kind in Africa.
Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the commissioning ceremony on Tuesday, said the college was established to provide practical, hands-on training in solar and other renewable energy technologies.
According to the President, BARECKS is particularly designed to empower rural communities and train aspiring renewable energy technicians across the region.
He said the establishment of the college reflected the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding access to clean energy, creating employment opportunities and equipping young Nigerians with technical skills relevant to the future.
Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, commended the Tinubu administration for bringing the project to the state, describing it as a strategic investment in human capital development.
Ododo said the institution would strengthen the capacity of Kogi youths by equipping them with modern technical skills capable of promoting job creation, technology transfer and economic growth.
The governor urged young people in the state to take advantage of the institution by enrolling for renewable energy training that could improve their livelihoods.
Also speaking, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Dr Mustapha Abdullahi, praised Tinubu’s commitment to promoting sustainable renewable energy education in Nigeria.
Abdullahi described the commissioning as a significant milestone in renewable energy education, skills development and community empowerment.
He added that the college could serve as a model for similar renewable energy education and skills-development initiatives across Africa.
