Kogi State Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Engr Abubakar Bashir Muhammed has praised the decision of President Muhammadu Buhari to appoint a committee for the purpose of resuscitating the long abandoned Ajaokuta Steel Company.
He made the commendation in an interview with our reporter in Lokoja, describing the decision as a step in the right direction and a clear demonstration of Buhari’s love for Kogi State and the nation’s economic development through industrialisation.
Engr Bashir said giving life back to the Steel Company which suffered neglect over the years under successive governments shows the President was a man ready to fulfill his campaign promises, especially to Kogi State where he had assured he would make sure Ajaokuta Steel came back on stream under his reigns.
The commissioner noted that at no time was the need for the resuscitation of the Steel hub more important than now, in view of the current economic challenges being faced globally as a result of the Coronavirus Pandemic.
In his words; “Many nations are making efforts to see how they can kick-start their economies and Nigeria is no exception. If you look at the price of oil at the international market, it says it all. There’s an urgent need for diversification and Ajaokuta is a veritable opportunity for the country to do that because oil as the chief foreign exchange earner has nosedived in fortune.
“The intention of the current Federal Government is to create a robust economic system that future generations would be proud of. It is the same thing that Kogi State Government under Governor Yahaya Bello is assiduously working towards.”
He therefore urged citizens of the state to continue to support the policies and programmes of the current administration at all levels, assuring that it was through that that government would be encouraged to do more to alleviate the socio – economic challenges in the society.
