Over the weekend, a significant moment unfolded at the Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, marking a historical milestone thirty-two years post-establishment with its inaugural lecture.

Dr. Joel Akowe, the immediate past Dean of the School of Management Studies, delivered the pioneering lecture titled “Manpower Resourcing and Productivity Management in The Public Sector: The Cacophony of Paradox.”

In his address, Dr. Akowe emphasized the pivotal role of governmental mandates in delivering public goods and services, stressing the indispensable principles of effectiveness and efficiency. He underscored the imperative of a high-quality workforce in achieving these objectives, insisting on an objective, fair, and transparent recruitment process to ensure competence and integrity.

Dr. Akowe cautioned against the detrimental influence of political interests and nepotism within public offices, which often result in the influx of inadequately qualified personnel beyond institutional capacities. He outlined the adverse effects of such malpractices, including incompetence, disciplinary issues, and industrial disputes.

To address these challenges, Dr. Akowe advocated for stringent staff auditing in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), adherence to due process in recruitment, and the adoption of predetermined criteria for candidate selection. Moreover, he proposed comprehensive civic education initiatives to promote accountability, transparency, and fair competition in employment processes.

Dr. Salisu Usman Ogbo, the Rector of Kogi State Polytechnic, underscored the significance of the inaugural lecture in the institution’s academic evolution under his stewardship. Highlighting various achievements, including advancements in security infrastructure, accreditation of programs, and campus development projects, the Rector affirmed the institution’s commitment to academic excellence and ethical standards.

Under his administration, the Polytechnic witnessed substantial improvements in facilities, including hostel renovations, lecture theater upgrades, and the establishment of a modern medical center. The Rector also emphasized the institution’s dedication to combatting unethical behaviors and enhancing examination procedures through the implementation of Computer-Based Testing (CBT) centers.

The inaugural lecture and the subsequent remarks by the Rector reflect the commitment of Kogi State Polytechnic to academic excellence, institutional integrity, and service to the public.
