Kogi Power Rotation Gains Support from Ejeh of Ofu »

The Ejeh of Ofu, HRH Dr Akwu Obaje, has endorsed the advocacy for rotational political power in Kogi State, saying the approach could help promote peace, equity and unity among the people.

The monarch made his position known when he received a delegation of the Kogi Unity Accord at his palace in Ugwolawo, Ofu Local Government Area, where he pledged the support of the Ofu Traditional Council for the proposed power rotation framework.

Obaje drew a parallel with the rotation of the Attah Igala stool, which he said helped resolve a succession crisis within the Igala Kingdom following the death of the late Attah Igala, Alhaji Aliyu Obaje.

According to him, disagreements over the succession process persisted until the then Kogi State Government under Governor Idris Wada repealed the existing law to allow for rotation among the four original ruling houses in the Igala Kingdom.

The Ejeh said although the decision was initially opposed by some traditional rulers, the rotational arrangement had subsequently contributed to peace, development and unity in the selection of successive Attah Igala.

He urged political leaders and other stakeholders in Kogi State to draw lessons from the experience and agree on an equitable system of political power rotation.

“It is about time for Kogi State leaders to come on a roundtable and agree on an amicable and equitable way of power rotation for peace and development,” the monarch said.

Obaje described the advocacy as timely and pledged to attend the proposed Kogi Leadership and Stakeholders Summit on Power Rotation. He also promised to mobilise people from Ofu to participate in the initiative.

Speaking earlier, the Convener of the Kogi Unity Accord, Omoluabi Bode Adeyemi, said the engagement was part of the group’s statewide consultation ahead of the proposed summit.

Adeyemi said the consultations were aimed at securing the participation of traditional rulers, religious leaders, socio-cultural organisations and other stakeholders in discussions on political power sharing and balanced development in Kogi State.

He said the group believed that issues concerning political power, governance and resource distribution should be addressed through dialogue, mutual respect and broad consensus rather than confrontation or exclusion.

According to him, the proposed summit would provide a neutral and inclusive platform for stakeholders to discuss power rotation and resource allocation in the state.

Adeyemi stressed that the campaign was not directed against any individual, ethnic group, senatorial district or political interest, but was intended to build consensus around what he described as a more equitable political arrangement.

He also linked the discussion to Governor Usman Ahmed Ododo’s second-term ambition, arguing that continuity in governance could provide a basis for consolidating existing policies, projects and institutional reforms while allowing stakeholders to develop an acceptable succession framework.

The Convener said the Kogi Unity Accord would continue consultations across the three senatorial districts, with traditional rulers, religious leaders, community leaders and socio-cultural organisations expected to contribute to the conversation.

He urged stakeholders to approach the proposed summit with an open mind and a commitment to developing a framework that promotes fairness, unity and peaceful political coexistence.

The group said the support expressed by the Ofu traditional institution represented another development in its ongoing consultations, adding that further engagements would continue in the coming days.
