5th Cycling Lagos Gets Backing from Union Bank, Others »

Union Bank of Nigeria Plc, AIICO Multishield, Checkers Custard and other corporate organisations have backed the fifth edition of Cycling Lagos, an initiative promoting cycling, environmental sustainability and responsible waste management.

The 2026 edition of the event is scheduled for Saturday, September 12, at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

Union Bank said its sponsorship was informed by the initiative’s broader impact on Lagos, particularly its focus on environmental sustainability beyond sporting activities.

“Our support for this project is in recognition of the impact that this initiative has on the State, which extends beyond sport event into environmental sustainability,” the bank stated.

President/CEO of Cycling Africa, Bamidele Adeleye, said the growing support from corporate organisations showed increasing recognition of the role of collaborative initiatives in tackling environmental challenges while encouraging healthy lifestyles and sustainable development.

Adeleye appreciated Union Bank, AIICO Multishield, Checkers Custard, the Lagos State Cycling Association and other supporting organisations for supporting the vision of Cycling Lagos.

According to him, the event has evolved beyond a cycling competition to become a platform for promoting healthier communities, environmental responsibility, recycling and sustainable development.

“We are particularly encouraged by the support from corporate organisations that understand that cycling can be a powerful platform for communicating important messages about the environment and sustainability,” Adeleye said.

He said the organisers would use the fifth anniversary edition to deepen conversations around recycling and encourage individuals, businesses and governments at all levels to take practical steps towards building a cleaner and more sustainable society.

The 5th Cycling Lagos is organised by Cycling Africa in collaboration with the Lagos State Cycling Association and is themed “Trash to Treasure.”

The edition will focus on recycling, environmental consciousness and the economic and environmental opportunities available within Nigeria’s waste management sector.

As part of activities leading to the event, organisers will hold the 5th Cycling Lagos Webinar on Thursday, September 3, 2026.
The webinar, themed “Trash to Treasure: Unlocking Recycling Capacity for a Sustainable Future,” is expected to bring together experts, policymakers, environmental advocates, recycling practitioners, businesses and other stakeholders to discuss practical approaches to expanding Nigeria’s recycling capacity.

The September 12 event will feature cycling activities for adults and children, as well as advocacy and awareness initiatives aimed at promoting cycling and environmental sustainability.
