Herdsmen get their weapons from Libya-Audu Ogbe

The Fulani herdsmen in Nigeria became fully armed following the proliferation of arms that ensued the fall of the Libyan former leader Maumar Gaddafi, the Nigerian Minister of Agriculture, Audu Ogbe has said.

This ministerial proclamation could be reported to be a subtle confirmation by government that the Fulani herdsmen, as generally alleged, actually moved around the country with lethal weapons.

“The suppliers of the herdsmen weapons are the renegades that emerged in Libya after the war that led to the demise of Gaddafi,” the Minister averred.

Chief Ogbeh who said this on Wednesday night while responding to questions on a national television, suggested that the perennial herders/farmers crises could only be brought to an end “if ranches are established and illegal arms are blocked from entering the country.”

“The herdsmen get their weapon from Libya. There has been arms proliferation in Libya since the fall of Gaddafi’s regime. Nigeria’s land borders need to be more protected to check the inflow of such weapons and other illegal goods” he added.

Chief Ogbeh affirmed that ranching remained the only option in addressing the perennial herders/farmers crisis.
