Youth commission bill in Kogi State passes second reading


A bill for a law to establish Kogi State Youth Development Commission and other matters connected therewith 2017 entered second reading on Tuesday at the Kogi State House of Assembly.

Sponsor of the bill and member representing Ankpa I state constituency, Hon. Ahmed Mohammed, who lauded his own bill said it could not have come at a better time.

He youth in Kogi state face numerous challenges in their quest to contribute to the socio-economic development of the state, and expressed hope that when passed into law, the bill would help in addressing some of the identified challenges.

Hon Ahmed, who is also the Deputy Majority Leader of the Assembly, mentioned some of the problems they face to include poor attitude to sustainable youth development policies, lack of adequate employment opportunities, poor youth orientation and mindset, high level unemployability, youth restiveness among other vices.

The lawmaker expressed hope that the document would provide requisite legal framework that would encourage synergy between government and agencies responsible for employment generation and implementation.

Other benefits of the bill highlighted by the legislator also include creation of jobs and economic development opportunities through legally established independent and recognized institutions, attraction of counterpart funding from Federal Government and other International Donor Agencies on funds required for youth programs.
