Ododo Urges Nigerians to Defend Democracy, Hails Tinubu, Abiola on June 12
Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, has called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in protecting and strengthening the country’s democratic institutions, describing democracy as the most credible platform for ensuring peace, development, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
In his Democracy Day message to commemorate the June 12 celebration, Governor Ododo congratulated Nigerians on another milestone in the nation’s democratic journey and urged citizens to reflect on the sacrifices of heroes who fought for the country’s democratic advancement.
The governor noted that democracy derives its strength from the active participation of the people, quoting former American President Abraham Lincoln’s famous description of democracy as “government of the people, by the people, for the people.”
According to him, despite the numerous challenges confronting Nigeria, democracy has continued to provide the framework for national development, peaceful coexistence, and inclusive governance.
Governor Ododo urged Nigerians to preserve the gains of democracy by rejecting actions capable of undermining democratic institutions while embracing values such as tolerance, dialogue, unity, and responsible citizenship.
He also cited former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s assertion that good governance remains a critical factor in reducing poverty and promoting development, stressing that democracy provides the foundation upon which effective governance can thrive.
The Kogi governor paid glowing tribute to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, describing him as one of the foremost champions of Nigeria’s democratic struggle whose political journey reflects the rewards of commitment to democratic ideals and service to the nation.
He said President Tinubu stood with other patriots during some of the country’s most challenging periods in the fight for democracy and has now earned the opportunity to serve Nigeria at its highest level through the democratic process.
Governor Ododo also called on Nigerians to continue supporting and praying for the country and its leaders, emphasizing that nation-building remains a collective responsibility requiring patriotism and positive contributions from all citizens.
The governor further honoured the late Bashorun Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, GCFR, describing him as the pillar of Nigeria’s democratic consciousness.
According to him, despite his wealth and influence, Abiola chose to sacrifice for the democratic aspirations of Nigerians rather than compromise the nation’s future, adding that his struggle gave birth to modern democracy in Nigeria and would continue to be remembered as a foundation of the country’s greatness.
On behalf of the government and people of Kogi State, Governor Ododo wished Nigerians a memorable Democracy Day celebration and called for renewed commitment to building a stronger nation where democracy continues to deliver hope, justice, opportunity, and prosperity for all.
