Kogi Mourns Three Killed in Iluke Attack as Security Forces Foil Abduction of WAEC Candidates
The Kogi State Government has expressed deep sorrow over the killing of three residents of Iluke Community in Bunu District of Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area following a terrorist attack by armed criminals disguised in military uniforms.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the government described the attack as tragic and extended its condolences to the families of the victims, the people of Iluke Community and the entire Bunu District.
According to the statement, the attackers attempted to deceive residents by wearing military uniforms before launching their assault on the community.
Despite the loss of three lives, the state government praised the swift intervention and bravery of military personnel and local security operatives, whose actions reportedly prevented a mass abduction of students writing the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
The government disclosed that the gunmen had disrupted an ongoing WAEC examination and had already begun marching students into the bush before security personnel confronted them in a fierce gun battle.
It noted that the superior firepower and professionalism of the security forces led to the successful rescue of all the students, who were returned to safety without injuries.
During the operation, one of the attackers was neutralised while several others reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds. The government said security agencies have launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects and are intensifying efforts to ensure that everyone connected with the attack is apprehended and prosecuted.
The state government also commended members of the military, local vigilantes, hunters and other security personnel for their sacrifice and patriotism, saying their prompt response prevented what could have resulted in a devastating mass kidnapping.
It added that authorities are closely monitoring developments in the affected community and are collaborating with relevant security agencies to reinforce security presence in the area, with additional measures expected to be announced.
The government urged residents to remain calm, vigilant and supportive of security operations by providing credible and timely information that could aid ongoing efforts against criminal elements.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property, the government stressed that Kogi State would not succumb to acts of terror, insisting that criminals seeking to undermine peace and security would continue to face a coordinated and uncompromising response from security agencies.
The statement concluded by expressing solidarity with the people of Iluke Community while praying for the repose of the souls of the deceased and assuring residents that efforts to restore peace and bring the perpetrators to justice remain ongoing.
