Onoja decries Kogi East Elders Negative Representation of Igala People

By Halimat Isah

The people of Igala Kingdom have been described as good people with poor representation in both national and state levels by some self-imposed elders.

The interests of the people, the Chief of Staff to the Kogi State Governor, Hon Edward Onoja, lamented, were not always protected by the elders who portrayed themselves as their leaders.

Onoja made the remark while reacting to the address delivered by the Kogi State University Medical Students in Government House, Lokoja.

Onoja further lamented how some elders from Kogi East Senatorial District who held sway in various leadership positions in the country were unable to attract any form of development to their people and the state, and ended up misrepresenting them.

He appealed to the elders to stop misinforming the people and put their interest aside to allow those at the helm of affairs to bring about the desired transformation in the socio-economic development of the state without distractions.

He explained that the New Direction government came on board at a time when there were numerous challenges militating against the state in all its higher institutions and commended the Governor for his courage to have them solved.

Onoja noted that the present administration has succeeded in changing the narratives as regards tertiary institutions in the state, saying credible statistics point to the fact that it has been from worst to better.

In his words: “For the first time in the history of the institution we are having Governing Council members of eminent qualified academicians who understand what academic environment is all about and not businessmen trying to make millions from our schools.”

According to him, there were Governing Council members under the previous administration who couldn't read nor write, stressing that poor leadership almost killed the state owned institutions.

Returning to the students, he urged them to distinguish themselves in the new universities they were being farmed out to and be good ambassadors of the state.

It was reported that the Kogi State University Medical Students who could not complete their studies due to non-accreditation of their course were moved to other universities to complete their academic programmes.
