Urge Karimi to Embrace Issue-Based Politics

The Kogi West Youth Leaders Forum has defended the democratic credentials and grassroots relevance of Hon. Leke Abejide, describing his election to the National Assembly as evidence of the confidence placed in him by his constituents.

The forum made the position known in a statement signed by its Secretary, Barr. Ajibola Cornelius, in response to comments credited to Senator Sunday Karimi during an interaction with stakeholders in Isanlu.

According to the group, while citizens have the constitutional right to express political opinions, such views should be guided by facts, respect and an understanding of democratic values.

The forum said Abejide, an elected member of the National Assembly representing Yagba Federal Constituency, secured his mandate through a democratic process, arguing that his political relevance should be assessed based on his relationship with constituents and record of engagement.

“Democracy goes beyond occupying a political office; it is about earning the trust of the people, maintaining a strong connection with the electorate, and consistently demonstrating commitment to their needs and aspirations,” the statement said.

The group argued that leadership should be measured by public acceptance, accountability, accessibility and impact, adding that Abejide’s continued relevance in Kogi West politics was based on his accessibility, grassroots engagement and attention to issues affecting his constituents.

It also criticised what it described as attempts to attribute political challenges to individuals rather than examining the expectations of the electorate and the responsibilities of political leadership.

The forum said political competition and criticism were normal in a democracy but urged political actors to demonstrate humility, accountability and the ability to accept constructive criticism.

It further rejected the suggestion that Abejide’s political strength was based on propaganda or unnecessary controversies, maintaining that his relevance was derived from grassroots support, engagement and service to his constituents.

The youth leaders also expressed concern over attempts to involve traditional institutions in political disagreements.

According to the group, traditional rulers should be protected from political disputes because of their roles as symbols of unity, peace and cultural heritage.

The forum said it was aware that Abejide had previously offered to reconcile Senator Karimi with the traditional institution, describing the gesture as an indication of a willingness to promote reconciliation.

“As the 2027 political season approaches, we urge all stakeholders to focus on issue-based politics, constructive engagement, and developmental ideas rather than personal attacks and accusations,” the statement said.

The group urged Karimi and other political actors in Kogi West to embrace maturity, accountability and respect in their political engagements.

It maintained that Abejide’s democratic credentials were defined by his election, service, grassroots acceptance and commitment to his constituents, adding that anyone seeking to challenge his political relevance should do so through superior ideas, better service and the confidence of the electorate.

“The future of Kogi West belongs to the people, and their democratic choices must always be respected,” the forum said.
