Kogi State Government has expressed readiness to continue to support the State Sector of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) to ensure drastic reduction in the statistics of road accidents within its borders.

The State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello gave the assurance on Friday in Lokoja in an address he delivered at the flag – off of the 2019 Ember Months Campaign of the FRSC.

The Govenor who was represented by his Deputy, Hon Edward Onoja said Kogi State has a unique characteristic in terms of border as it is the pathway to all parts of the country.

He noted that there was a relationship between road safety and safety of lives and property on the road and frowned at the increase in criminal activities along Kwali – Abaji Area of the Federal Capital Territory which some segments of the report have consistently, but erroneously, attributed to Kogi State.

The Governor stressed that his administration was prepared to work closely with the FCT command of the Nigerian Police to arrest the situation, adding that security was everyone’s business.

In his address, the State Comamnder of the FRSC in the state, Emmanuel Abe said FRSC has always identified with collaborative efforts in dealing with the challenges of road carnages in its 31 years of existence, adding that successive leadership of the Corps worked hard to sustain the campaign to make the nation’s roads safe for all categories of users.

He reminded guests at the event that traffic accidents do not just happen, but that they are caused by lawlessness, negligent, impatient and unskilled drivers.

Mr Abe added that factors such as use of dysrunctional vehicles, bad/worn out tyres, dangerous overtaking at bends and hill crests, use of phones while driving, lane indiscipline, drunk driving/ driving under the influence distracted driving, flagrant disobedience for rules of the roads, impatience and lack of courtesy are human elements that predispose road users to crashes.

He then expressed gratitude to the State Government for the support FRSC has continued to enjoy and appealed for further support to make their job of saving lives of road users easier.
