NEMA flag-off distribution of relief materials to flood victims in Kogi

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has started distribution of relief materials to households affected by the 2022 flood disaster in Kogi State.

Leader of the NEMA team to Kogi state, Dr. Nura Abdullahi, disclosed this while flagging off the phase one and two of the distribution of the relief materials to victims in Lokoja the state capital. He said the team has been in the state for three weeks, adding that the aim was to bring succor to the victims and to support their livelihoods.

He said that the items distributed are expected to boost the socio-economic conditions of the beneficiaries selected from the affected LGAs.

Dr. Nura while stating that Kogi state is yet to receive all of the items allocated to it, attributed the delay to certain logistics issues which he assured would be addressed soon.

Local governments to benefit from the distribution includes Bassa, Kogi, Omala, Ajaokuta, Lokoja, Igalamela-Odolu, Idah and Ibaji.

Receiving the NEMA team in his office earlier before the flag-off, the Kogi State Deputy Governor who is also the Chairman of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Chief Edward Onoja, appreciated the team for being on ground to carry out the assignment. He thanked the Federal Government and it agency (NEMA) for always being proactive in addressing emergency issues across the country.

Onoja while recounting the effects of reoccurring flooding on the state, urged adequate planning by NEMA in the face of predicted flooding to ensure that relief material gets to victims on time to enable them recover from the devastating effects of the flooding.

Items distributed includes: livelihoods equipments comprising grinding machine and sewing machine; Food Items comprising rice, beans, sorghum, vegetable oil, salt, tomatoes, seasoning cubes.

Others are Non-food Items such as mosquito nets, nylon nets, blankets, foam mattresses, cooking pots, detergents, cooking stoves, toilets soaps; Rice Seedlings, which includes rice seeds, maize seeds, cassava seedlings, herbicides, pesticides, growth enhancer fertilizer and water pumps.

beneficiaries were advised to avoid selling the items as doing so would frustrate the effort of the federal government.
